Fuuko is about to ask a question. It's an important one, no, Fuuko is absolutely positive that it's a very important one, a question so important that Fuuko should have asked it sooner but it was much too weird for Fuuko to handle before now!

[A quick bit of writing later and 'MAGIC' appears in the journal, circled a few times with an arrow pointing to it. There's really no missing it.]

Please tell Fuuko about magic!

[Though her reasons for wanting to learn are all over the place, ranging from 'wanting to help out more' to 'creating her own starfish heat', she's still very serious about learning more about this magic stuff. Her expression captured on the journal is nothing less than that right now.]

All Fuuko knows about magic is a little information on the spirits which Fuuko learnt in school, but Fuuko doesn't know enough about their personalities to know how to go about contacting them just like that! They might not even like the starfish, how horrible. Maybe Fuuko could make an appointment with one... If you intend to tell Fuuko about any kind of magic Fuuko can learn that isn't too weird then thank you very much!

[She had to include something about it being too weird. Simple stuff is fine, she's not looking to conjure dark things or flip skirts or whatever else 'weird' magic might be used for.

Later in the day after asking her question, Fuuko can be found in the tea shop. If you come in today you might end up getting Fuuko as your server. Don't be surprised if she tries to recommend to you the starfish tea. While she's not serving or talking to anyone, Fuuko will have a walkman clipped to her clothes and a pair of headphones over her ears. If you're close enough you might be able to hear part of what she's listening to.]

[The greeting isn't hard to miss, and Raine walks to approach Fuuko as the girl makes her arrival.] So you have, and bundled up properly as well, I see.

Of course, it would be absolutely awful if Fuuko forgot Fuuko's own advice.

[Now that they're both here there's no time to waste!]

Where should we start? Please tell Fuuko what to do and Fuuko will do exactly as you say!

Let's take a little walk to the river, actually - I've thought of a better spot, and I'll explain a little more on the way.

Okay! If you think that's best then lead the way, Fuuko will follow along and listen to the best of Fuuko's ability.

[Oh shoot, maybe she should have brought a notebook along. She'll just have to listen twice as hard to make up for it.]

All right. [She'll indicate for Fuuko to walk along with her.] The first thing to keep in mind is that when you're talking to the spirits, they don't exactly speak the way you and I do. You might interpret it as a voice, but mostly you just... get a sense for what they're trying to say. But I understand the experience can be different for people.

Secondly, her making contact with you could take some time. You'll have to be willing to keep trying until contact does happen. If she's curious as to what we're doing, she might be drawn to us, but we'd have to keep it up until she's satisfied enough to call on you. Hopefully it won't take long for that, but you should be prepared to face that anyway.

Fuuko will be sure to remember that. [She nods while keeping up alongside Raine as the two walk together.]

Does that mean Fuuko will have to try again tomorrow too? And the day after? Fuuko will keep trying everyday until she feels happy enough to contact Fuuko, Fuuko does not want her to think Fuuko is being too forward!

The more you try, the more likely it is that she will open up to you. She seems to prefer it when there is undivided attention given.

Fuuko would think all the spirits would like it when you concentrate only on them. Or is Sona the kind of spirit who likes the spotlight only her and is really quite rude about it if you stop paying attention to her?

I wouldn't say she's like that, exactly. I think the spirits themselves have been forced to become more open-minded about their help, even if they don't really realize it...

Mm! [Fuuko nods. She doesn't really see how the spirits have become more open-minded to her, though she hasn't been around nearly as long as Raine has.] Did the spirits used to be much more seclusive a long time ago? Fuuko has only ever heard of the spirits being fairly open as long as you're determined before now.

I used to hear a lot more cases of people having trouble with them. But then again, not everyone may be trying for all of them anymore. [She gives a small shrug. They're closer to their destination now, at least; a nearby riverbank.]

Maybe the people have changed instead and they're just trying much harder to make things work. Even so, Fuuko thinks trying to communicate with all of the spirits must take a lot of time! Fuuko never even thought about going for all of them. [Would the other spirits feel left out if she went for some and not others though? Hm.]

It takes a lot of time and dedication to do so. Don't worry, it's not required that you contact all of them. Just start with whatever you feel most comfortable with and see how you feel about it.

Then Fuuko will start like this and see how things turn out! Fuuko is sure everything will go well, and even if it does not at first then Fuuko will try harder.

Then let's begin the practice. Close your eyes, and focus on the water in front of you.

[She quickly nods before following the instructions. Part of her wants to tell Raine how hard she's focusing right now but she ends up deciding that wouldn't really show good focus, so Fuuko keeps her mouth shut and concentrates on the water.]

[For her part, Raine observes and lets the girl sit in silence for a while - she knows that Sona won't be putting in any sort of appearance today.

This next part isn't particularly easy, since spirits don't have real voices. There's a certain tone, though, to their actions and impressions. Sona is cold, logical, and rather easy for Raine to emulate. That and she does secretly seem to enjoy taking on roles that fit the situation.]

... Defender of Starfish, why do you call to me?

[It takes a lot of effort for Fuuko to keep her eyes closed when she's addressed as 'Defender of Starfish'. No one has ever called her that before! She almost seems startled as she jumps to attention before replying.]

F-Fuuko would like to make a pact with you! It would make Fuuko very happy if you decided to work together with Fuuko.

[Her voice is kept low, calm, as she continues the act.]

You are willing to take the time to learn? We must get along first, you and I. We must understand one another.

Of course we will both get along, Fuuko is sure of it! This is because Fuuko will definitely put in the time to learn everything there is to know about you.

[With her eyes still closed, Fuuko rummages around in her coat and pulls out a starfish carving.]

Please accept this.

That is a precious offering. Please hold on to it for me, for I have no means of holding it myself.

Fuuko will hold onto it very tight! Maybe when it is warmer Fuuko will float it off to sea for you, or let it sail down the river. Fuuko is positive the starfish would enjoy being in the water like that.
